bowsprit
Ship's forward spar
A bowsprit is a pole or spar projecting forward from a sailing ship's bow.
It extends the area for rigging sails, allowing attachment of stays and jibs that would otherwise have no anchor point.
The bowsprit is a defining feature of traditional sailing vessels, visible in everything from clipper ships to small sailboats.
