winds

Breezes and gales

Winds functions as both verb and noun.

To wind (rhymes with "find") is to follow a curving path: The road winds through the mountains.

To wind (rhymes with "pinned") is to turn something repeatedly, as when winding a clock or winding thread onto a spool.

To wind up is to end in a particular state: We wound up staying the whole weekend.

The noun winds (always rhymes with "pinned") is the plural of wind—moving air: Strong winds knocked down power lines.
