tacking

Changing wind direction

Tacking is changing a sailboat's direction by turning the bow through the wind, causing the sails to shift from one side to the other.

More broadly, tacking means shifting course or approach: After the poll numbers dropped, the campaign started tacking toward the center.

Tacking also refers to fastening loosely with long temporary stitches before permanent sewing, or attaching something with tacks.
