genoa

Overlapping triangular headsail

A genoa is a large triangular sail used on sailboats, similar to a jib but extending past the mast toward the stern.

It catches more wind than a standard jib and is common on cruising yachts: We switched to the genoa when the wind dropped.

Also called a genoa jib or genny. (Capitalized Genoa is the Italian city.)
