tack
Small flat-headed nail
The commonest kind of tack is a fastener with a sharp end (thumbtack, upholstery tack).
In seafaring, tack is the direction of a vessel.
If you take or try a new tack, in a boat or elsewhere, you go off in a different direction.
Around horses, tack is a shortening of tackle and refers to harnesses, saddles, bridles, and such.
To tack something is to attach it with tacks or (in a boat) to sail in a particular direction.
