gybe
Stern wind turn
To gybe is to shift a sail from one side of a boat to the other when sailing downwind, or to change course by doing so.
The maneuver can be abrupt and dangerous in strong winds if the boom swings across unexpectedly: We gybed and headed for the harbor.
Also spelled jibe, especially in American English.
