monsoon

Tropical wet season

A monsoon is a seasonal wind pattern that brings heavy rainfall, especially in South Asia.

The word commonly refers to the rainy season itself or the dramatic downpours that accompany it: The monsoon flooded the streets within minutes.

Informally, any torrential rain might be called a monsoon: We got caught in a monsoon on the way home.
