mainsail

Boat's chief canvas

A mainsail is the principal sail on a sailing vessel, typically the largest and set on the mainmast.

On modern sailboats, it's the sail attached to the back of the mast and controlled by the boom: We hoisted the mainsail as the wind picked up.

The mainsail provides most of a boat's forward drive when sailing upwind.
