typesetters

Print layout workers

Typesetters are workers who arrange text for printing.

Before computers, typesetters composed pages by placing individual metal letters or operating machines that cast type.

The trade required precision and literacy.

Now the term applies to anyone who formats text for publication, though the work has shifted almost entirely to software: The typesetters caught several errors before the book went to press.
