swash

Water rushing ashore

Swash is the sound and motion of water splashing or surging, especially waves rushing up a beach: the swash of water against the hull.

To swash is to splash or swagger about noisily.

In typography, swash refers to decorative flourishes extending from letterforms—the elegant tails and loops on fancy capitals.

A swashbuckler was originally one who made noise by striking a sword against a shield; now it means a dashing adventurer or the genre featuring them.
