typecase
Printer's sorting box
A typecase is a shallow tray with compartments for storing individual pieces of metal type used in letterpress printing.
Each letter, numeral, and punctuation mark has its designated slot, arranged for efficient access by the compositor.
The terms uppercase and lowercase derive from the physical placement of these cases—capital letters were stored in the upper case, small letters in the lower.
