quarto

Twice-folded book size

Quarto refers to a book or page size created by folding a standard printer's sheet twice, producing four leaves (eight pages).

The term comes from the Latin for "fourth." In discussions of early printed books, especially Shakespeare's plays, quarto editions are distinguished from the larger folio format.

The first quarto of Hamlet appeared in 1603.

Quarto can also describe any book of roughly this size, typically around 9 by 12 inches.
