blackletter

Ornate angular typeface

Blackletter is a style of typeface with heavy, angular strokes and elaborate flourishes, modeled on medieval manuscript writing.

Also called Gothic script, it was the dominant printing style in Germany into the twentieth century and remains associated with formal documents, beer labels, and heavy metal band logos: The diploma was printed in blackletter.

In law, blackletter refers to well-established legal principles: blackletter law.
