serif

Typographic finishing stroke

A serif is the small decorative stroke or line extending from the ends of letters in certain typefaces.

Compare the feet on letters in Times New Roman to the clean edges of Arial.

Typefaces with these strokes are called serif fonts; those without are sans-serif.

The newspaper uses a serif font for body text.
