press

Push down firmly

Press is a shorthand term for the news media, originally only newspapers but now including all news media in expressions like press conference, press release, and the mainstream press.

This is based originally on printing press, a machine used to print words on paper.

The underlying verb press means to exert steady, continuous force, the way you press a button or use a steam iron: She pressed the wrinkles out of her blouse.

The idea of pressure extends to figurative use, so press also conveys making a demand or forcefulness.
