ligature

Thread tying vessels

A ligature is something that binds or ties.

In medicine, it's a thread used to tie off blood vessels during surgery.

In typography, it's two or more letters joined into a single character: the ampersand (&) began as a ligature of the letters e and t.

In music, a ligature holds the reed to a clarinet or saxophone mouthpiece.

The verb ligate means to tie off with a surgical thread.
