impression

What remains after

An impression is an effect or mark left by something pressing against a surface: The ring left an impression in the wax.

More commonly, it's a mental effect—your sense or feeling about something: I got the impression she wasn't interested, first impressions matter.

An impression can be a vague notion rather than certain knowledge: I was under the impression we'd already paid.

In entertainment, an impression is an imitation of someone's voice and mannerisms: He does a killer impression of the president.

In printing and advertising, an impression is a single instance of contact—one copy printed or one ad displayed.
