Linotype

Hot-metal machine maker

Linotype is a trademark for typesetting machines that cast whole lines of text as single metal pieces.

The brand name became so synonymous with the technology that it's often used generically in lowercase.

The newspaper upgraded to a newer Linotype model in 1952. (Lowercase linotype refers to the technology generically.)
