quoin

Masonry corner block

A quoin is an exterior corner of a building, or more specifically, one of the stones or bricks forming that corner.

Quoins are often made of contrasting material or cut to stand out from the wall, serving both structural and decorative purposes: The limestone quoins gave the brick facade a stately appearance.

The word also refers to a wedge used for various purposes—locking up printing type, adjusting the elevation of a cannon, or securing cargo.
