block printing

Carved surface stamping

Block printing is a technique for reproducing images or text by pressing carved blocks—typically wood—onto paper or fabric.

The raised surfaces of the block receive ink and transfer it to the material.

The method predates movable type and remains used for decorative textiles and art prints: She learned block printing to make her own fabric designs.
