journeyman

Competent, not exceptional

A journeyman is a worker who has completed an apprenticeship and is qualified to practice a trade, though not yet a master.

The term comes from the French word for day—a journeyman was paid by the day rather than bound to a single employer.

Extended to sports and other fields, journeyman describes a competent professional who moves between teams or positions without achieving star status: He spent fifteen years as a journeyman pitcher, reliable but never spectacular.
