widows

Left behind, mourning

Widows is the plural of widow, a woman whose spouse has died and who hasn't remarried.

The term extends beyond marriage: golf widows are neglected while partners play, war widows lost husbands to combat.

In typesetting, a widow is an orphaned line of text stranded at the top of a page or column.
