gutter

Roof's drainage path

A gutter is a depressed area in which water or other liquid collects.

Gutters are installed around the edges of roofs to carry rain to a downspout, and they run along the sides of roads for proper drainage.

If someone is in the gutter they are in a low, poor condition – as if by the side of the road.

As an adjective, gutter means low and vulgar (gutter talk).

When a candle gutters, liquid wax runs down its side.
