phototypesetting

Light-based typesetting

Phototypesetting is a method of setting type that uses photographic processes rather than metal type or movable blocks.

Text is projected through a lens onto light-sensitive paper or film, which is then developed and used to create printing plates.

This technology dominated professional publishing from the 1960s through the 1980s, replacing hot metal typesetting and eventually giving way to digital desktop publishing.

The newspaper switched to phototypesetting in 1972.
