typesetter

Arranges metal letters

A typesetter is a person or machine that arranges text for printing.

Before digital publishing, typesetters assembled individual metal letters or operated machines that cast lines of type.

The term now applies to software and workers who prepare digital layouts: The typesetter caught several formatting errors before the book went to press.
