hierarchy
Chain of command
A hierarchy is a system organized by rank, with each level subordinate to the one above.
Power flows from top to bottom: corporate hierarchies, military hierarchies, the hierarchy of the Catholic Church.
The word extends to any ranked ordering: a hierarchy of needs, a hierarchy of values.
Hierarchical systems impose structure but can also entrench inequality.
