segregation
Mandated racial separation
Segregation is the separation of people or things into distinct groups.
The word most often refers to the enforced separation of racial groups—historically, Black Americans from white Americans in schools, housing, and public facilities: Jim Crow laws mandated segregation in the South.
The practice can be legal (de jure) or result from social patterns (de facto): residential segregation persists in many cities.
More broadly, segregation applies to any systematic separation: gender segregation in sports, segregation of duties in accounting.
