housing projects
Government-built apartments
Housing projects are government-subsidized residential developments, typically large complexes of apartment buildings built to provide affordable housing for low-income families.
In American usage, the term often carries connotations of urban poverty, crime, and neglect—the result of decades of underfunding and racial segregation in public housing policy: She grew up in the projects.
Also called simply the projects.
