Rosa Parks

Montgomery bus activist

Rosa Parks was an American civil rights activist whose 1955 refusal to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Her act of defiance became a defining moment in the American civil rights movement.

Parks is often called "the mother of the civil rights movement," though she was one of many activists challenging segregation.
