segregation era

Legally mandated separation

The segregation era refers to the period in American history, roughly from the 1870s through the 1960s, when laws and customs enforced racial separation, particularly in the South.

During this time, Black Americans were relegated to separate and inferior schools, housing, transportation, and public facilities: My grandmother grew up in the segregation era and couldn't drink from the same water fountains as white people.

The era formally ended with civil rights legislation in the 1960s.
