proscription

Decree of banishment

Proscription is official condemnation or prohibition—a formal ban or decree outlawing something or someone.

In ancient Rome, proscription was the public posting of names of those condemned to death, their property forfeit to the state.

The word now applies broadly to any authoritative prohibition: the proscription of certain drugs, proscription against discussing salaries.

Not to be confused with prescription, which recommends rather than forbids.
