Mandela
Imprisoned South African leader
Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid leader who spent 27 years in prison before becoming the country's first Black president in 1994.
His name has become shorthand for moral authority forged through suffering and reconciliation.
The Mandela effect describes the phenomenon of many people sharing a false memory—named for the widespread mistaken belief that Mandela died in prison in the 1980s.
