lockout

Workers barred entry

A lockout is a situation where someone is prevented from entering or accessing something.

In labor disputes, a lockout is when management shuts out workers to pressure them during negotiations—the employer's counterpart to a strike.

In sports, a lockout suspends play when owners and players can't agree on contracts: The NHL lockout canceled the entire season.

More generally, a lockout occurs when you're shut out of your car, house, or account: I had to call a locksmith after a lockout.
