Soweto
South African township
Soweto is a sprawling urban area southwest of Johannesburg, South Africa, whose name derives from "South Western Townships." Created under apartheid to segregate Black residents from white areas, it became a center of resistance—the 1976 Soweto Uprising, when police killed student protesters, galvanized international opposition to apartheid.
Today Soweto remains a cultural landmark: We visited Mandela's house in Soweto.
