enclave

Land within land

An enclave is a territory entirely surrounded by another territory—a pocket of one country within another's borders, or a distinct area within a larger region.

The word extends to any group or space set apart from its surroundings: an ethnic enclave in the city, an enclave of wealth in a poor neighborhood.

The defining feature is isolation or distinctiveness within a surrounding whole.
