township
Local government unit
A township is a unit of local government or land division, varying by country and region.
In the United States, townships are subdivisions of counties with limited self-governance, common in the Midwest and Northeast.
In land surveying, a township is a six-mile square containing 36 sections.
In South Africa during apartheid, townships were segregated urban areas for nonwhite residents: Soweto township.
The term sometimes describes a small community that hasn't incorporated as a town.
