emancipation

Chains finally broken

Emancipation is the act of freeing someone from bondage, oppression, or legal restriction.

The word is most associated with the abolition of slavery—Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation declared enslaved people in Confederate states to be free.

More broadly, emancipation applies to liberation from any constraining authority: the emancipation of women, emancipation from parental control.

In law, an emancipated minor gains adult rights before reaching the age of majority.
