Steve Biko

Steve Biko was a South African anti-apartheid activist who founded the Black Consciousness Movement in the 1960s.

He argued that Black South Africans must reject white definitions of their identity and reclaim psychological liberation as a prerequisite to political freedom.

Biko died in police custody in 1977 after severe beatings, becoming a martyr whose death drew international condemnation of apartheid.
