whites only signs
Jim Crow placards
Whites only signs were markers posted in the American South and other segregated areas designating spaces—drinking fountains, restrooms, restaurants, waiting rooms—restricted to white people.
These signs enforced Jim Crow laws from the late 1800s until the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The phrase now evokes the era's systematic racial exclusion: The museum displayed original whites only signs from the 1950s.
