racial profiling

Bias-based policing

Racial profiling is the practice of targeting people for suspicion of crime based on their race or ethnicity rather than specific evidence.

Most commonly associated with law enforcement—police stopping, searching, or detaining individuals because of how they look: He was pulled over for driving while Black.

The term emerged in the 1990s during debates about discriminatory policing.

It extends beyond police work to security screening, store surveillance, and border enforcement.
