Reconstruction
Post-Civil-War era
Reconstruction is the period in American history from 1865 to 1877, following the Civil War, when the federal government attempted to reintegrate the former Confederate states and address the status of freed slaves.
The era saw constitutional amendments guaranteeing citizenship and voting rights, followed by violent backlash and the eventual abandonment of federal protections.
Reconstruction ended with the Compromise of 1877. (Lowercase reconstruction is rebuilding or restoring something.)
