boycott

Consumer protest tactic

Boycott is a refusal to buy, use, or participate in something as a form of protest or pressure.

Consumers boycott companies over labor practices; nations boycott another country's exports.

The word comes from Charles Boycott, an Irish land agent so shunned by tenants in 1880 that his name became the act itself.

They called for a boycott of the Olympics.
