Robben Island
South African penitentiary
Robben Island is a small island off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa, historically used as a prison.
Its most famous prisoner was Nelson Mandela, who spent eighteen years there during apartheid.
The island is now a museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site, symbolizing the triumph of democracy over oppression: We took the ferry to Robben Island.
