Afrikaner
Dutch-descended African
An Afrikaner is a white South African of Dutch, German, or Huguenot descent whose native language is Afrikaans.
Afrikaners dominated South African politics for most of the twentieth century and were the architects of apartheid.
The term carries historical weight connected to both settler colonialism and the eventual transition to democracy.
Many Afrikaners trace their ancestry to seventeenth-century Cape Colony settlers.
