shunning

Giving cold shoulder

Shunning is the act of deliberately avoiding or excluding someone, often as punishment or social enforcement.

Religious communities may practice formal shunning of members who violate rules: The congregation voted for his shunning after he left the faith.

More casually, it describes any persistent avoidance: Her shunning of social media was unusual for someone her age.
