Group Areas Act
Racial segregation law
The Group Areas Act was South African apartheid legislation (1950) that designated specific urban areas for exclusive occupation by particular racial groups.
The law forced mass relocations of Black, Indian, and Coloured South Africans from their homes to segregated townships: My grandmother lost everything when they enforced the Group Areas Act in District Six.
Repealed in 1991.
