optics
Study of illumination
Optics is the branch of physics dealing with light and vision.
More commonly now, optics refers to how something appears to others—the public perception or political impression it creates: The optics of the meeting were bad, It's not illegal, but the optics are terrible.
This sense treats appearances as something to be managed, distinct from substance.
