iris

Pupil's colored border

The iris is the colored part of the eye surrounding the pupil, controlling how much light enters.

The word also names a genus of flowering plants with showy blooms in purple, blue, yellow, or white—the distinctive petals supposedly resembling the eye structure.

In optics and photography, an iris is an adjustable diaphragm that regulates light passage: The camera's iris opened in low light. (Capitalized Iris is a proper name.)
