ion
Atom with charge
An ion is an atom or molecule that carries an electrical charge because it has gained or lost electrons.
Positive ions (cations) have lost electrons; negative ions (anions) have gained them.
Ions are fundamental to chemistry and physics, appearing in contexts from battery technology to biological processes: Sodium ions cross the cell membrane.
Salt dissolved in water breaks into ions.
