sound

What ears detect

Words from different sources have settled on the spelling sound and represent all the major parts of speech.

The noun is most frequent, with two meanings: something perceptible by the ear (the sound of a train whistle), and a body of water along a coast with an opening to the sea (Long Island Sound).

The verb also has two meanings; most frequent is the one associated with hearing.

Something that sounds makes a noise.

This verb is used figuratively to characterize the way things seem to the mind: Her excuse sounded suspicious to me.

The other sound verb conveys measuring the depth of something.

Finally, the adjective sound indicates that something is free from disease, error, or flaw.
